Pender Island was rent asunder in 1902 when a canal was dredged between Bedwell and Browning harbours to allow for easier transport of marine traffic. More than fifty years later, in 1955, a narrow, one-lane bridge reconnected the two but not before some significant cultural differences had developed. Already less populated than her sister island, South Pender grew much more slowly than North Pender and is still more rural and more sparsely settled.
With a population nearly ten times that of South Pender Island, North Pender Island also has most of the islands’ services and amenities, among them the medical centre, elementary school, community hall, library (The Pender Lender), the island’s only gas station, several grocery stores, and the Driftwood Mall with its wide variety of merchants. Both islands have lovely old churches, roadside stands from which one can purchase fresh farm produce and flowers, and numerous galleries.
